Vegemite – you either like it or you don’t. It really was one of the things I missed the most when I immigrated from Australia to the Netherlands in 1987. Somehow hagelslag really wasn’t my thing. And trust me Marmite is just not the same.

I don’t remember the magical moment when we discovered a store in the City Center of The Hague stocked Vegemite. I even think that we bought it one time when we went to Amsterdam. Now we can buy it in the specialised English stores.

My eldest daughter is also a big Vegemite fan, but the youngest will run out of the room as soon as we open the jar. Vegemite and butter on toast is in my opinion the best, although on a crumpet it is also fab and or even just on a cracker.

When I was in London last month I bought two jars as soon as I saw how cheap it was. At the cashier Suzy thought that I was buying  vitamins, ‘no almost but even better’ I replied!
